The Desert Botanical Garden is a 140-acre botanical garden in Papago Park, Phoenix, Arizona. It was founded in 1937 by the Arizona Cactus and Native Flora Society and established on its present site in 1939. The collection holds more than 50,000 plants in over 4,000 taxa, a third of them native to the area and 379 of them species that are rare, threatened or endangered. Among the largest holdings are 4,026 agaves in 248 taxa and 13,973 cacti in 1,320 taxa, with particular strength in the Opuntia sub-family; plants from less extreme climates are grown under shadehouses. The garden concentrates on species adapted to desert conditions and includes Australian, Baja California and South American collections, together with plantings representing a mesquite bosque, semi-desert grassland and upland chaparral. It is designated a Phoenix Point of Pride.
