Where these come from

Every photograph of an attraction is from Wikimedia Commons(opens in a new tab), reached through the Wikidata entry for each attraction. Commons files are freely licensed by definition, which is why they are used here in preference to sources that are merely free to look at.

Google Places photographs are deliberately absent. The Google Maps Platform terms bar storing them, exactly as they bar storing ratings and review counts, so a site built ahead of time cannot use them at all.

A note on the descriptions

Alternative text on photographs that have not yet been reviewed is the attraction's name rather than a description of what is in the frame. That is accurate but not good: those images were gathered by a script that cannot see them, and honest alt text needs someone who has looked at the photograph. Records whose photographs have been chosen by hand carry alt text written by the person who looked at them; the rest are being worked through.
