The Hohokam Pima National Monument protects an ancient Hohokam village within the Gila River Indian Community, near Sacaton, Arizona. Its archaeological site, Snaketown, lies about 30 miles south-east of Phoenix and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964; the monument was declared in 1972 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The land is owned by the Gila River Indian Community, which has decided not to open the area, and there is no public access to the monument. Artefacts from Snaketown are held in the museum at Casa Grande Ruins National Monument in Coolidge, and the Huhugam Heritage Center carries exhibits on tribal history and archaeology. Definitive dates are not established, though the site is generally thought to have been inhabited between 300 BCE and 1200 CE; both the identity of the Hohokam and the period of occupation remain subject to debate. Hohokam is an O'odham word meaning "those who have gone".
