It forms part of the Coronado National Forest and holds campsites, picnic areas and several miles of hiking trails. Migrating birds rest in the canyon, and it is known for birdwatching. It was originally named White House Canyon, after a prominent white adobe house built there in the late 19th century, and was renamed in the early 1900s, though some residents still use the older name.
