The Painted Desert Community Complex Historic District is the administrative centre of Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona, planned by the architects Richard Neutra and Robert Alexander as part of the Mission 66 park-facilities improvement programme, with work beginning in 1961 and completed by 1965. Unlike earlier Park Service architecture, which sought to blend with its surroundings, the complex uses straight, manufactured materials that deliberately contrast with the environment. Its most significant building, the Painted Desert Visitor Center, is a severely modernist structure housing administrative offices, a visitor centre, an auditorium and a clinic; other structures include employee housing, a community centre, a school and a Fred Harvey Company concession building. Neutra and Alexander divided the complex into public and private zones with low walls, setting residential areas apart from the public zone. The original landscape's non-native plants died out once irrigation was removed. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005 and designated a National Historic Landmark District in 2016.
