The Phoenix Indian School, known in its later years as Phoenix Indian High School, was a school operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Encanto Village, in the centre of Phoenix. It opened in 1891 and closed in 1990 on the orders of the federal government. It taught the lower grades as well until 1935, and served as a high school thereafter. Throughout its existence it was the only non-reservation BIA school in Arizona. The Phoenix Indian School Historic District, a three-acre portion of the 160-acre campus containing several of its most historic buildings, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.
