Anthem Veterans Memorial

The Anthem Veterans Memorial is a monument in Anthem, Arizona, dedicated in 2011 to the service of members of the United States Armed Forces. Its five white pillars represent the branches of the armed forces and are arranged in Department of Defense order of precedence: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. Each pillar carries an elliptical opening slanting downward toward the Great Seal of the United States set in the ground below, and on Veterans Day, 11 November, the openings admit sunlight onto the seal at 11:11 am Mountain Standard Time. The design goal was 11:11:11 am; year-to-year variation places the alignment between 11:10:58 and 11:11:22 over the coming century, and the effect can be observed at least one day either side of Veterans Day. The monument is surrounded by 2,200 red paving stones engraved with the names of veterans; the red stones, the white pillars and the blue Arizona sky stand for the colours of the flag of the United States. Renee Palmer-Jones designed the memorial and James Martin was its engineer. The community holds ceremonies at the site each year on Memorial Day and Veterans Day.
