Mount Baldy is an extinct stratovolcano in eastern Arizona with a summit elevation of 11,409 feet. The peak rises above the tree line and is left largely bare of vegetation, which gives the mountain its name. It is the highest point in the White Mountains and in Apache County, the fifth-highest in the state, and the highest outside the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff. The summit lies within the Fort Apache Indian Reservation; an unnamed sub-peak of 10,890 feet, about half a mile north, lies off the reservation and is reached by a maintained trail. The Mount Baldy Wilderness occupies the eastern slope and is managed by the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. The mountain is among the most sacred to the Apache of Arizona, one of the four ranges the Western Apache inhabited with the Pinaleño Mountains, Four Peaks and the San Francisco Peaks. Captain George M. Wheeler visited the summit in 1873 and named it Mount Thomas after General Lorenzo Thomas; the name later became Mount Baldy, and the US Geological Survey has since assigned Mount Thomas to a nearby peak. Mount Baldy holds the headwaters of both the Little Colorado and Salt rivers. Its Western Apache name is Dził Łigai.
