A mountainous region of eastern Arizona rising to Mount Baldy at 11,400 feet, much of it within the Fort Apache Indian Reservation.
The White Mountains of Arizona are a mountain range and mountainous region in the eastern part of the state, near the border with New Mexico. They continue from the west the Arizona transition zone and Mogollon Rim, the Rim itself ending in western New Mexico, and form part of the Colorado Plateau high country of north-eastern Arizona. Much of the range lies within the Fort Apache Indian Reservation, and the part outside the reservation is in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. Nearby communities include Show Low, Pinetop-Lakeside, Greer, St Johns, Springerville, Eagar and McNary. The highest summit is Mount Baldy, at 11,400 feet. The mountains are drained to the south by several tributaries of the Salt River and to the north by the Little Colorado River, and hold several small lakes. They are the setting of the 1993 film Fire in the Sky, which recounts the reported disappearance of the logger Travis Walton in 1975.
