The Pinaleño Mountains are a mountain range in south-eastern Arizona, near Safford. They have over 7,000 feet of vertical relief, more than any other range in the state, and rise from the surrounding Sonoran-Chihuahuan Desert to subalpine forest at their higher elevations. The Nature Conservancy describes them as traversing five ecological communities and holding the highest diversity of habitats of any mountain range in North America. The highest point is Mount Graham, at 10,720 feet; the whole range is often called Mount Graham locally, in which case the summit is referred to as High Peak. The mountains cover 300 square miles and form part of the Safford ranger district of the Coronado National Forest. They are a Madrean sky island, a range isolated by the deserts around it, where difference in elevation and the intervening desert keep flora and fauna from moving between ecosystems and distinct subspecies can develop; the Mount Graham red squirrel is an isolated population of red squirrels and possibly a subspecies. The Yavapai name is Walkame, pine mountains, and the Western Apache Dził Nnilchí' Diyiléé, pine-burdened mountain. Safford and Willcox are the nearest towns.
