St. Mary's Basilica

St Mary's Basilica, formally the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is a Roman Catholic church in Phoenix, Arizona, previously known as St Mary's Church. It was built between 1902 and 1914 in a combination of the Mission Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival styles and was dedicated in 1915, replacing an adobe church of 1881 raised when the parish was founded. The Franciscan Friars staffed the parish from 1895; it is now served by clergy of the Diocese of Phoenix. Pope John Paul II raised the church to the rank of minor basilica by the decree Una Propemodum Voce of 2 September 1985. It is the oldest Catholic parish church in the greater Phoenix area and was the only parish in the city until 1924. It holds the largest collection of stained glass windows in Arizona and a 26-rank pipe organ built by the Schantz Organ Company.
