Verde River Greenway State Natural Area protects almost 1,000 acres of riparian and upland habitat along the Verde River at Cottonwood, Arizona, and is administered as a unit of Dead Horse Ranch State Park. The designation originally sheltered six river miles and has since grown to encompass 35. The Verde is one of the few free-flowing rivers in the desert, and the river and the plants along its banks support a diversity of plant, animal and insect life in an otherwise arid state. About a mile of trails runs along the river within the natural area, connected to the trail system of Dead Horse Ranch State Park, and there is a river access point at Tuzigoot.
