A rugged range on the western edge of the Phoenix area, rising to Barry Goldwater Peak at 4,083 feet and named for its granite tanks.
The White Tank Mountains are a mountain range in Maricopa County, Arizona, on the western periphery of the Phoenix metropolitan area, flanked by Buckeye to the south-west and Surprise to the north-east. Their peaks reach an elevation of about 4,000 feet, the highest being Barry Goldwater Peak at 4,083 feet, and the range consists of numerous ridges, peaks and canyons rather than a single prominent summit. It was formed as part of a detachment fault in the mid-Tertiary, about 30 million years ago, and being young in geological terms it retains a rugged topography of rocky fault ridges and deep canyons. Heavy rainfall sends water rapidly through the steep canyons, and over time this has scoured depressions, or tanks, in the white granite near the base of the mountains; these give the range its name. The White Tank Mountain Regional Park lies within the range.
