Beaver Dam Wash

The Beaver Dam Wash is a seasonal stream near the south-western Utah–Nevada border. It begins in the Clover Mountains of Lincoln County, Nevada and flows south across sparsely populated desert terrain; at its southern end in northern Arizona, near the point where it empties into the Virgin River, it flows throughout the year. Part of the wash lies in the Beaver Dam Wash National Conservation Area, managed by the Bureau of Land Management, and it was named for beaver dams once built along its course. It occupies a transition zone between the Colorado Plateau, Great Basin and Mojave Desert ecosystems, and the surrounding area, which includes several protected wilderness areas, holds forests of Joshua trees along with other yuccas, cholla and barrel cactus, Mormon tea, grasses and shrubs. The lower elevations are designated critical habitat for the threatened desert tortoise, and desert bighorn sheep, Gila monsters and Mojave rattlesnakes are also found there. Summer highs commonly exceed 100°F, and flash floods are common when heavy monsoon thunderstorms fill the washes and gullies. At 2,179 feet, Beaver Dam Wash is the lowest point in the state of Utah.
