The Copper Queen Mine was a copper mine in Cochise County, Arizona, whose development drew the town of Bisbee up around it during the 1880s. Its orebody ran at 23 per cent copper, an extraordinarily high grade. Phelps Dodge acquired the mine in 1885, and by the early 1900s it was the most productive copper mine in Arizona. Copper mining in the district declined through the 1930s and 1940s, but the Copper Queen continued to be worked by the open-pit process in the years after the Second World War. Phelps Dodge closed it in 1985 as returns fell. The old workings are open to guided tours.
