The Dragoon Mountains are a range in Cochise County, Arizona, about 25 miles long on an axis running south-south-east. The name comes from the 3rd U.S. Cavalry Dragoons, who fought the Chiricahua, among them Cochise, during the Apache Wars, and who established posts in the area from about 1856, after the Gadsden Purchase brought it into United States territory.
