Archaeological sites on the San Carlos Apache Reservation where a 1946-60 field school found Ancestral Pueblo, Mogollon and Hohokam evidence.
The Point of Pines Sites are a set of archaeological sites on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona, around the settlement of Point of Pines, significant for their associations with the Ancestral Pueblo, Mogollon and Hohokam cultures. Emil Haury chose the area as a field school site because of the unusual presence there of all three prehistoric cultures; the field school ran from 1946 to 1960 and collected large amounts of evidence from numerous sites, with the anthropologist Richard B. Woodbury among its participants. The region occupies a high plain bounded by the Nantack Ridge and the Willow Mountains, showing extensive evidence of prehistoric occupation; its early sites fit the Mogollon culture model identified by Haury, while after the 13th century an influx of Anasazi from the Colorado Plateau, and possibly Hohokam from the Safford region, is indicated by the presence of Jeddito ware, a pottery type associated with the Hopi heartland. Haury's student Terah Smiley excavated and identified a rectangular Western Pueblo-style kiva at several of the sites, a form still in use today. The sites were collectively declared a National Historic Landmark in 1964.
