Ganado Mission's nursing school, the first accredited programme for Native American women in the US, became a landmark in 2009.
Sage Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, at Ganado Mission in Ganado, Arizona, was the first accredited nursing programme for Native American women in the United States. It eventually drew students from more than 50 Native American tribes as well as women of Mexican, Spanish, Inuit, Japanese, Filipino and Chinese descent, at a time when accredited nursing education was not generally open to non-white students elsewhere in the country. Some white parents sought to have their daughters admitted because of the quality of the training, but the school's director, Dr Clarence G. Salsbury, chose to maintain the programme solely for minority students, a decision made during a period of active public school segregation. The school was designated a National Historic Landmark on 16 January 2009.
