The Sierra Prieta is a mountain range 14 miles (23 km) long in central north-western Arizona, forming the mountainous region west of Prescott. Thumb Butte, a volcanic plug of 6,514 feet (1,985 m), stands on the city's western perimeter. The range is attached to the north-west of the Bradshaw Mountains, and Granite Mountain, a recreation and rock-climbing site overlooking Williamson Valley to the north-east, forms part of its north-eastern section. It lies next to the north-western perimeter of the Arizona transition zone, which is known mostly by its own perimeter, the Mogollon Rim.
