The Totem Pole is a rock spire in Monument Valley, Arizona, and is the highly eroded remnant of a butte. It stands beside a group of thicker spires the Navajo call Yei Bi Chei. The De Chelly and Wingate Sandstones that form the buttes, spires and mesas of Monument Valley were laid down in deserts at the end of the Permian period, some 260 million years ago. The formation can be seen from the self-guided Valley Drive.
