Arizona Snowbowl is an alpine ski resort on the San Francisco Peaks of northern Arizona, fifteen miles north of Flagstaff. The ski area covers approximately one per cent of the San Francisco Peaks, and its slopes face west and north-west. Skiing operations began in 1938, which makes it one of the first ten ski resorts established in the United States, and it is one of only three in Arizona. The base elevation is 9,200 feet above sea level and average annual snowfall is 260 inches. The lift-served summit stands at 11,500 feet, giving a vertical drop of 2,300 feet, the largest in the state. Six chairlifts serve the area, among them one high-speed detachable chairlift and one high-speed gondola and chair hybrid, together with two lodges, Hart Prairie Lodge and Agassiz Lodge.
