Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument is a national monument protecting more than 900,000 acres around the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona. The area was already protected from most development; the designation made permanent a twenty-year moratorium on new uranium mining imposed in 2012. The name joins Havasupai words meaning 'where tribes roam' with Hopi words meaning 'our ancestral footprints', and many sites within the monument are held sacred by the peoples who have lived in the region since time immemorial.
