The valley on the Salt River that holds the Phoenix metropolitan area, better known since the 1930s as the Valley of the Sun.
The Salt River Valley is an extensive valley on the Salt River in central Arizona, containing the Phoenix metropolitan area. The term still identifies the area, though from the early 1930s the promotional name "Valley of the Sun" largely displaced it in popular use. Topsoil dust from the valley, known as Arizona Dust, was long used as a standard test material for measuring the efficiency of air filters; it was found to contain small abrasive particles.
